Save the Presidio.

The Presidio is one of San Francisco’s great treasures. Founded as a fort by the Spanish in 1776, and home to the U.S. Army from 1846 to 1994, the Presidio today is a national park of unique historic importance and scenic beauty. Unfortunately, the threat of excessive development and urbanization could irrevocably destroy the Presidio’s historic character, choke the Presidio with congestion, and transform the Presidio into a city within the city.

The Presidio Trust, which manages the Presidio for the federal government, is currently considering the following proposals:

  • Construction of a 100,000 square-foot contemporary art museum at the highest point on the Main Post, the heart of the Presidio. As part of the project, the bowling alley and tennis court would be destroyed to make room for the museum.
  • Construction of 110-room, 80,000 square-foot hotel on the eastern side of the Main Post.
  • Expansion of the historic Presidio Theater into a three-theater multiplex.

If these plans for new construction succeed, the Presidio could receive approximately two million more visitors per year. The Presidio’s historic character and natural beauty will be lost forever.
